The Irish Justice Minister Brian Lenihan announced today the creation of an Office of Internet Safety and the an Internet Advisory Council.
The Office of Internet Safety (OIS) will be responsible for safety awareness campaigns, a complaint hotline, and ensuring compliance with the ISP industry's code of practice.
"Concern remains high about the appropriateness of certain material which is easily accessible on the internet...Those who misuse the internet are highly sophisticated and technically astute, and we must continually and pro-actively examine the effectiveness of our defences," explained Mr. Lenihan.
This represents a significant change in thinking that other countries should adopt. The Internet is unlike any other forum or entity in society, and requires special attention when it comes to dealing with Internet abuses.
Protecting children is not solely the responsibility of governments. Mr. Lenihan explained "It is incumbent on all involved in promoting the exciting resource which is the internet to ensure the best possible protection for the community and to reduce the risk of internet crime, particularly that involving the exploitation of children, in all situations."
CP80 echoes Mr. Lenihan's call for involved and committed responsibility on the part of governments, industries, and communities to work together to create a safer Internet experience for our children.
Governments do and should maintain the right to use statutory solutions if the Internet industry is not responsive to efforts to protect children.
The CP80 Foundation is pleased to offer free training to individuals who wish to learn more about the Internet, pornography, current laws and the CP80 Internet Channel Initiative.
