Trafficking, Prostitution, and Pornography

Harvard Law School recently hosted Visiting Professor Catharine MacKinnon in a talk about the links between trafficking, prostitution, and pornography.

Professor MacKinnon described trafficking, prostitution, and pornography as a three act play, rather than separate entities. She illustrated the point by telling the story of Linda Susan Boreman who was forced to live two and a half years with a man who violently forced her to marry him, participate in pornography, pimped her out to other men, abused and raped her.

Professor MacKinnon explained that in many cases trafficking and prostitution is one in the same: sex for sale. Increasingly women involved in prostitution are trafficked and forced into it.

Professor MacKinnon questioned why pornography isn't viewed as a form of trafficking. It is sex for sale. She closed by saying that all three should be identified by one name: prostitution.

A student asked the Professor what can be done legally and socially. "MacKinnon responded that it is important to know the fight isn't over yet. Act three may be in "stasis," but these ideas and ways of framing trafficking, prostitution, and pornography are in discourse, and, thus, the issue is much more open than it is credited as being."
