Facebook to Improve Protection Measures

Facebook, the popuar social-networking site that boasts more than 30 million users worldwide, will take steps to better protect its users from pornography and harassment. PC World reports that users can now report complaints by emailing abuse@facebook.com or by clicking links on the website.

The decision came as part of the settlement of a consumer fraud investigation brought by New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. Mr. Cuomo's office subpoenaed Facebook last month, citing concerns that investigators posing as minors were solicited on Facebook by adult predators. Investigators also said the website did a poor job responding to complaints.

Some, like Connecticut's Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, don't think the settlement went far enough. "New York's settlement with Facebook is a step forward, but giant strides are needed to make the site safer," explained Mr. Blumenthal's office "We will explore all options -- including possible legal action."

Facebook should be recognized for making these efforts, although time will show if they are valuable or effective in protecting children. It is encouraging however in the overall struggle to protect children. The industry, as well as governments and parents, must each do their share and work together to effectively protect children.
