Sex Abuse in School

News outlets around the country are reporting on an AP story which found that over the last 5 years there have been 2500 reported cases of teachers being punished for sexual misconduct. That adds up to nearly three perpetrators for each school day. More than 80% of the victims were students.

The AP cited a Congressional report as saying 4.5 million of the estimated 50 million students in the U.S. have been subjected to some form of sexual misconduct between kindergarten and their senior year in high school.

So why amidst a growing sympathy for victims of sexual abuse, do we still have so many cases? The AP report discovered that many deny the existence of a problem. Fellow teachers and administrators don't want to cause trouble and fear embarrassment for their school. Lawmakers don't want to criticize teachers - the most important profession in our society. So what are we left with? "In case after case the AP examined, accusations of inappropriate behavior were dismissed."

There is great danger in not speaking up. In this case it can lead to hundreds, perhaps thousands of children who are victimized and are powerless to stop it.

In the end - what are we more afraid of? Causing temporary embarrassment - or allowing a lifetime of guilt, shame, and confusion for a generation of children?
