WBNS in Columbus, Ohio discovered it was very easy to access pornography on school computers, despite the use of filters.
The station conducted an investigation on the computer filtering systems of 41 school districts to determine how effective filers were in blocking pornography. The station reported that it "found the basic filtering system for each of the districts tested either failed to block all pornography or were not configured in a manner that would totally stop obscenities."
The investigation turned up pornographic results for simple search terms like "backseat," "Madonna book" and "Paris Hilton." Images included nudity, bestiality, and intercourse.
15 districts use LACA for their filtering systems - and their computers turned up pornography just like the others. "'My first reaction was, I was a little bit surprised,' said LACA Executive Director Sandy Mercer."
The fact that filters don't work shouldn't surprise anyone. We've been led to believe that our only option for protection in our schools, homes, or businesses are faulty filters. This isn't true, more options exist. It is high time our elected leaders take action to make those options a reality.
