UN Forum Examines Internet

Agence France Press provided a preview of topics to be discussed at this week's Internet Governance Forum, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Topics will include lack of Internet accessibility to 80% of the world's population, protecting personal data, fighting human trafficking, and preventing terrorism.

Protecting children online will be the most important topic discussed at the forum. Markus Kummer, one of the event's key organizers, told the media that protecting children "is a theme of general concern" and is high on the agenda. He said ""We can do a lot in this area if there is good cooperation."

Discussions will examine how to prevent access to child pornography, and how to limit the accessibility of child predators to children via the Internet. Protecting children from viewing pornography and other harmful content online should also be considered.

The Internet Governance Forum is a United Nations organization that has no power to pass laws or regulations for the Internet. It does provide an opportunity for interested parties from government, the private sector, NGOs, (including the CP80 Foundation) and the general public to come together to discuss important Internet issues, like creating an Internet that is safe for children.

The Internet is a marvelous tool - but its "dark side" is often unexamined. This poses severe consequences for our children. CP80 calls on responsible citizens and decision makers around the world to consider child protection issues in their discussions, and to take meaningful steps toward offering parents real solutions, like the CP80 Internet Zoning Initiative, for protecting their children online.
