In a statement read on Monday at the opening of the Internet Governance Forum in Rio de Janeiro UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon voiced his support for measures to protect children from harmful content online. The
China View reported that the statement expressed Mr. Ban's hope that attendees strive to make an Internet that would make the world a safer place.
Mr. Ban's representative at the meeting, Undersecretary-General Sha Zukang, added his own thoughts: "We defend freedom but some regulatory mechanisms are needed. Freedom does not mean that we can do whatever we like. Is there anyone who would tolerate the use of the internet for terrorism or to send pornography to our children?"
This forum represents an important opportunity to place child protection issues at the forefront of future discussions about Internet development. CP80 echoes the thoughts of the Mr. Ban and Mr. Sha - and supports any and all efforts to protect children and freedoms.
The CP80 Foundation is pleased to offer free training to individuals who wish to learn more about the Internet, pornography, current laws and the CP80 Internet Channel Initiative.
