Teacher Loses Licsence for Porn

Luther Stephney, a second grade teacher at the Peru Primary School in Peru, New York had his license revoked after he was caught viewing pornography on school computers.

Mr. Stephney was first caught looking at pornography in 2004. At the time he admitted viewing porn 2 or 3 times. An investigation found that in one month he viewed porn on each of the classroom's 3 computers 6 times, including periods of 50 and 54 minutes. He maintains that the children were always out of the room.

Porn in our schools is concerning for a number of reasons. Most obvious is the fact that children may be exposed. But in light of the growing number of teacher-student sex incidences, teachers viewing porn on the job is particularly frightening. This is to say nothing of the traditional problems with porn in the workplace: creating a hazardous work environment, creating liability for the school, as well as the costs incurred to filter and monitor school computers.

We see an increasing number of stories like this, but society takes no action to remedy the situation. Do our elected officials lack the moral and political will to take action? Are we as parents doing enough to voice our support for initiatives and issues that will protect our children?

Mr. Stephney's story will be repeated - and will potentially lead to more disturbing events unless we stand up and demand change.
