Parents Beware

The New York Times is reporting that electronics are the toys children, including toddlers, want most. The article says that Amazon lists the Easy Link Internet Launch Pad from Fisher Price as one of the "hottest toys." The launch pad plugs into a USB port on your home computer and allows your children to surf only designated websites.

Other toys meant for older children do not come with such easy protection options. Toys like the PSP and other handheld electronic devices are often wireless enabled, allowing children to surf the Internet wherever they can get a wireless connection.

Groups in Australia are warning parents to be aware of what toys are on their child's Christmas list. Many parents in Australia, and around the world, are not aware that their children can access pornography with these devices. Ian Dalton, head of the Australian Family Council says both parents and tech companies are responsible to protect children. "No technology is completely innocent. It's incumbent upon manufacturers and retailers to ensure there are adequate safeguards. Filters don't always work but to a point they can be quite useful."

CP80 has written legislation for state governments in the United States that would require warning labels to be placed on wireless devices in order to help parents understand what these toys can be used for. California already has a similar law on the books.

Parents are responsible to protect their children - but we cannot ask them to do it without providing the tools and information necessary to effectively do so!
