The Home Wrecker

"And he sneaks downstairs to his computer every night and looks at porn." Those are the words of a devastated wife, explaining her marital problems to Linda Griffith Lewis, a marriage and family therapist in San Luis Obispo, California. Ms. Griffith explained "Cyber-porn has become such an issue between couples that many experts are calling it the new home-wrecker."

Pornography on the Internet is difficult to avoid. Ms. Griffith reported that 40 million Americans regularly view pornography online, and that a full 12% of websites are dedicated to pornography. Based on 2006 estimates, that means there are 12 million pornographic websites. That is to say nothing of the estimated 400 million individual pages of pornography on the Internet.

Porn addicts, often males, frequently ignore their partners and do less to maintain their real relationships. Women often internalize the addiction, questioning themselves and their worth. Trust becomes a huge issue. One woman told Ms. Griffith "It feels like he’s having an affair, and he’s not even leaving the house." Ms. Griffith concluded: "There’s no place in a healthy relationship for compulsive, degrading behavior."

Porn's addictive qualities should mean consumers have the ability to choose whether or not they are exposed to it. We deserve the right to choose whether or not this potent home wrecker should be in our homes at all.
