Youth Detention Center Staff Surfs Porn

An audit of staff computers at the Ashley Youth Detention Center in Deloraine, Australia found that 13 inappropriate images had been downloaded and there had been more than 120 hits on inappropriate and sexually explicit websites.

Allison Jacob, the deputy secretary of Health and Human Services said the department "has a zero tolerance policy in relation to staff accessing inappropriate or objectionable material in the workplace" and said in an internal memo that she was "extremely concerned" by the findings. Ms. Jacob also warned that there will be random audits in the future, and that individuals caught using computers inappropriately would be disciplined.

Pornographic magazines or pictures would certainly not be acceptable in any work environment, especially where there are troubled youth. Yet, because there is no choice on the Internet, employers have no choice except to allow pornography into their work spaces.

Future audits will cost money, as will any additional monitoring measures, including human and software resources. Not to mention the time lost from employees surfing pornography and ignoring their responsibilities. The Internet is broken, and in this case taxpayers are bearing the cost.
