Efforts to Protect Children

The Illinois State Police Director Larry Trent issued a warning to parents for the holidays. "We just want people to be careful when using the internet especially around the holidays," he said, "kids are off school and spend more time talking to their friends online. Parents need to know who their kids are chatting with online and be aware of online predators." He pointed people to the website of the newly created Internet Crimes Unit, created in part to protect families and communities from sexual predators.

In Germany the government launched a new Internet search engine that will allow children to search the Internet without running into violent or sexual content. The government invested more than $2.2 million, and worked with industry giants like AOL, Microsoft, and Google.

Bulgaria's State Agency for Child Protection recently held a round of discussions to explore better opportunities for filtering Internet access to protect children. SACP has received more than 400 tips about dangerous activities or content on the Internet involving children.

These are only a few of the nearly daily stories about governments, non-profits, communities, and individuals around the world looking for a better Internet. Most want an Internet that will allow families and communities to protect their children from damaging and harmful content. The CP80 Internet Channel Initiative offers that choice, and the CP80 Foundation is working with representatives around the world to make sure the solution is as widespread as the problem is.
