James Angel, a 33 year old anesthesiologist in the United Kingdom was acquitted of child pornography charges in 2004 after the jury agreed that he knew nothing of the 88 child porn images on his computer.
During his trial, Mr. Angel admitted that he began looking at pornography when he was 12, and graduated to rape websites. His doctor's apartment was covered with pornographic posters, magazines, and DVDs. He told the court he spent hours searching for pornography online, including websites depicting rape scenes.
He now faces disciplinary action before the General Medical Council (GMC) on new charges that he accessed pornography in 2006. A spokesman for the GMC said: "It is further alleged that his actions were unprofessional, inappropriate and liable to bring the medical profession into disrepute."
The consequences for Mr. Angel's personal life are tragic - but allowing an addict with a demonstrated and self-admitted record of graduating to harder forms of pornography to work with children is dangerous.
