Trafficking and Pornography

Most people are unaware of the size of the human trafficking market. 800,000 children are trafficked across international borders every year. Estimates show that the number of domestic trafficking victims is even higher. The UN says more than 2 million children are sexually exploited around the world. Those numbers say nothing of the thousands and possibly millions of women trafficked every year. Kusumbar Choudhury, of Save the Children India says "The child sex tourism trade is invisible as it is efficient."

A special report for the Toronto Star points out "What's helping keep it invisible is the proliferation of the Internet." There are small companies that actually advertise online resorts where "tourists" can abuse children.

The anonymity an unaccountability of the Internet also provides a forum for other kinds of abuse. Rosalind Porter of the Canadian group Beyond Borders told the Edmonton Sun that "improvements to Internet capabilities on wireless devices are making child porn even more accessible." She continued: "With technical advances, 'there's no thought as to the impact on children whatsoever.'"

Prober explained that legal sites provide a gateway to the depraving and illegal activities of predators and child pornographers. Many pornographic sites employ models who look young, luring potential predators to illicit sites.

Everyday we see news stories about a crackdown on a child porn or trafficking ring. Until we address the source of demand there will always be a supply for these despicable practices.
