The Associated Press reported today that Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty will fire nine city employees and reprimand or suspend an additional 32 more after an internal investigation revealed city computers had been used to access a staggering amount of pornography.
Each of the nine who were fired clicked on pornographic images more than 19,000 times last year. The average employee works 250 days a year - which means each clicked on pornography an average of 76 times a day! The 32 others all visited porn sites more than 2,000 times, or an average of 8 sites a day.
Everyone loses in this situation: the employees lost their jobs, the city lost workers, not to mention the hours, money, and productivity sucked out by the hours spent looking at porn. Taxpayer money was wasted and who knows how many citizens were neglected or not served because their local government was locked up in porn?
The Internet is a must have in today's working world. But how can any employer be expected to allow pornography into their workplace? It's addictive nature was clearly demonstrated by these DC workers.
Estimates show that American businesses pay about $39 billion each year in lost productivity costs - essentially a porn tax. Our businesses and economy deserve a better Internet.
