Steven Hirsch, co-founder of the world's largest porn producer Vivid Entertainment, called out Google and Yahoo for failing to provide better protection for children online. "None of the search engines and portals, but particularly Yahoo and Google, has taken any significant steps in this direction," Mr. Hirsch said in a statement obtained by AFP. He continued: "This is not about First Amendment rights, it is about protecting children."
Critics questioning Mr. Hirsch's motives are pointing to the fact that many porn companies like Vivid are losing money to the growing amount of free pornography available on the web. Yahoo and Google both said that that protecting children is a high priority.
Yahoo said "We have focused on protecting children from online pornography through our safe search feature, filters for offensive language, privacy preferences and parental controls."
Google told AFP: "We're deeply committed to helping keep our users safe. When it comes to child safety, we aim to empower parents with tools to make their own choices about what content they want their children to see and educate children on how to stay safe online."
Mr. Hirsch also said Vivid is willing to work with any company that wants to make it more difficult for children to be exposed to pornography online.
The CP80 Internet Zoning Initiative is the ultimate tool for empowering parents to decide for themselves what content is available in their own home.
