Power of Porn Not Understood

Michael Twohig, a psychology professor at Utah State University wants to examine the power of pornography addiction by testing a potential treatment.

Professor Twohig told the Herald Journal that pornography is the only type of addiction that has not been studied extensively. "It is shocking how little research there is," he said,"There are a lot of questions that need to be answered."

The study will involve helping clients to ensure their actions are in line with personal values. Professor Twohig indicated that pornography is a problem when it "interferes with the quality of your life or your values." He says that therapists in the area report that anywhere from 10 to 40% of their clients have problems with pornography.

There are some who do not consider pornography or sex addictions to be true addictions. These beliefs have stymied efforts to launch full scale research efforts. But how can we continue to ignore the growing mountain of evidence from therapists and divorce lawyers who say pornography and sex addiction come up again and again as a major source of problems?

And why, when it is suggested that pornography is addictive, do pornographers point to the fact that some therapists suggest pornography is helpful to a marriage? Could it be that pornographers, like tobacco companies of old, want to hide the fact that they understand the true power and addictive nature of their product? It took years before society readily acknowledged the dangers smoking - once a socially acceptable and encouraged behavior. How long until we recognize the true danger of porn?
