Internet Addiction is Real

Dr. Jerald Block, a psychiatrist at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, says that Internet addiction should be included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the profession's official manual. According to The Guardian, Dr. Block pointed out that South Korea "considers internet addiction one of its most serious public health issues". At least 10 people in South Korea died from blood clots that developed after they remained sitting for long periods of time in Internet cafes. The South Korean government estimates that 210,000 children are affected; 80% of them need drugs targeting the brain and 25% would need to go to the hospital. Reports from China indicate that as many as 10 million young people are suffering from Internet addiction.

The article also quotes the Pennsylvania based Centre for Internet Addiction Recovery which says that Internet addiction is a growing criminal, divorce, and employment problem. The center offers consultations to lawyers who are "assessing the role of electronic anonymity in the development of deviant, deceptive and illegal sexual online activities."

Clearly concerns about Internet and pornography addiction are not limited to moral arguments; this is a public health problem that is spiraling out of control.
