A 13-year old Dallas girl was arrested for allegedly luring other teens into performing sex acts in a nightclub. Lt. Chess Williams told ABC News that while it is unusual to find a teen drawing others in, there are more juveniles participating in prostitution than previously thought.
A 2004 program found that 120 teenage girls were engaged in sexual exchanges. Lt. Williams says the greatest difficulty is in deciding how to deal with these underage prostitutes - many are likely victims rather than criminals. "It's pretty unlikely that a 13-,14- or 15-year-old decided, 'I'm going to inject myself into the prostitution worlds and turn 20 tricks a night.'"
Who is preying on these young children? What drives a 13-year old to "recruit" other teens into the sex industry? Surely there are a number of factors, including drugs and money. But the overexposure of these children and those who abuse them to pornography must also shoulder some of the blame. Pornography objectifies human beings - and all too often consumers translate that objectification to the real world, leading to the abuse, trafficking, and prostitution of innocent children.
