UK Report on Child Safety

Last year the British Prime Minister asked Clinical psychologist Tanya Byron to head a review of how to look at the risks posed to children from content online and in video games.

The report, the Byron Review, was just released this morning. The review suggests a three-pronged approach to managing risk to children online:

1. Reduce Availability - Ms. Byron points out that the majority of harmful content is hosted by relatively few -so efforts should be focused there.

2. Empower Parents - Parents can use tools to restrict children's access.

3. Build Child Resilience - help kids better understand the Internet world.

The report also calls for the creation of child Internet safety council Why are Australia, the UK, and Europe in general is so far out ahead of the United States taking agressive action to protect children online? Was Congress just so turned off by COPA and other failures that it doesn't want to get its hands dirty again?
