Internet Safety Courses

What started as growing concerns about sex offenders grew into the first state mandate for Internet safety classes. FoxNews reported Monday that Virginia became the first state to require public schools to offer Internet safety training for all grade levels.

Many are welcoming the initiative, but some say it is a bit late. "Decisions to make Internet safety training part of the curriculum should have taken place years and years ago," said Judi Westberg Warren, president of Web Wise Kids, "Kids are encountering the Internet at younger and younger ages. Society is slow to realize the impact the Internet is having on kids."

Texas and Illinois have also passed Internet safety education laws, but they are not mandatory. Tammy McGraw, director of the Virginia Department of Education's office of educational technology has been working to develop the courses. ""We're all sensitive that many, many important things need to be addressed. This is absolutely essential."
