South Africa Moves to Curb Pornography

According to a report issued last year by South Africa's Film and Publications board, 81% of South African youth ages 13 to 17 know of friends who have pornography on their cell phones.

This finding most likely spurned a recent hearing in which cellphone operators told committee members that technological developments are making it harder and harder to keep pornography away from children.

The operators indicated that even if devices are in place to prevent downloading children are often adept at bypassing them.

The CP80 Foundation recognizes that parents are responsible to educate their children on acceptable uses for Internet-enabled devices. The responsibility is not theirs alone however - individuals and companies who develop technology are responsible to offer consumers options and choice. Technology can and must serve us.
