A letter signed by the Attorneys General of Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania was sent to MySpace on Monday asking for information on how many registered sex offenders use the popular social-networking site. The letter also asked that the profiles of registered sex offenders be removed.
In 2006 there were 100 criminal incidences around the country involving child predators and MySpace. Richard Blumenthal, the Attorney General from Connecticut called the mixing of children and sex offenders "a recipe for tragedy."
This is another example of the differences between the rule of law that governs the real world, and the anarchy that reigns in the virtual world.
In real life we go to great lengths to keep sex offenders away from our children. Tragically we are not always successful, but at least we don't allow sex offenders easy opportunities to prey on our children as they are able to do on the Internet.
Such is the case with Internet pornography - zoning ordinances and other laws regulate a minor's access to pornography in the real world. Online they can access any kind of pornography with the click of a mouse.
Opponents point out that the Internet is different from the real world and therefore the same rules can't apply. This is akin to saying that technology and its possibilities are valued higher than the lives and safety of our children.
In order to effectively protect our children from Internet pornography and online predators we must come to value life over technology. Unless we do then we can do nothing but use band-aids to close up an open-heart surgery.
The CP80 Foundation is pleased to offer free training to individuals who wish to learn more about the Internet, pornography, current laws and the CP80 Internet Channel Initiative.
