The Kaiser Family Foundation released "Parents, Children, & Media" a report detailing parents attitudes and concerns with their children's use of television, the Internet, and other media.
Among the more interesting findings:
85% believe sexual content in media is "a lot" or "somewhat" responsible for children becoming sexually involved prematurely.
An overwhelming majority of parents believe exposure to inappropriate material as someone else's problem: only 20% say their own children are exposed to "a lot" of inappropriate content.
infoZine reported that Victor Strasburger of the American Academy of Pediatrics says parents are fooling themselves. "Of course if you ask parents, 'Are you doing a good job in regulating the media that your kid sees?' they're going to say yes."
The survey highlighted a disturbing trend. The percentage of parents who said they were "very" concerned about their child's exposure to sex dropped from 67% in 1998 to 51% in 2006. This may not necessarily indicate a drop in concern - but simply a feeling of powerlessness against the amount of inappropriate content out there. One parent said, in reference to the negative content on the Internet "What are you going to do?" Another said "There are times I give in. There is just too much out there to monitor."
Those are frightening statements. How did we become so saturated with information and stimuli, appropriate or not, that we feel we are powerless to monitor or protect our families, within the walls of our own homes, from harmful content?
