Last week 18 year old Carley Furness decided to speak publicly about the atrocities she was submitted to at the hands of Peter Anscombe, who was found guilty of assault with intention to commit a sex crime. Mr. Anscombe attacked Ms. Furness in a park with a knife, mimicking a scene he'd downloaded from a pornographic website that glorifies porn. The prosecuting attorney said Anscombe "decided to turn grotesque fantasy into reality." He tried to rape Ms. Furness as he stabbed her.
A spokeswoman for the Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit said "Using pornography will not only make men more likely to commit acts of sexual violence, but also make them more likely to trivialise acts of sexual violence."
Ms. Furness's father called on the British government to investigate the website and others like it saying "It is not right that people can access these sorts of websites so easily."
It isn't right that anyone, especially children, can access such sites. What sort of disaster are we setting ourselves up for by allowing open and easy access to such websites - how many more men viewed the same site and are contemplating or have committed similar crimes? The danger is apparent - and yet we continue to do very little in terms of effectively addressing the problem.
