Technology Values Rights Over People

The Sydney Morning Herald wrote a story about the difficult balance parents must play between their child's right to privacy, and the parental obligation to protect their children from harm.

Pornographers and critics of pro-family movements often blame parents for their child's Internet pornography problem. But in the same breath many of these people would scorn parents who would take any steps to protect their children that would violate the child's privacy rights.

Parents are stuck. "We want to raise our children to have sound judgment, and also to enjoy privacy and the right to develop relationships independently" said Louise Newman, a professor of Psychiatry at the University of Newcastle in Australia, "On the other hand, when a system which has great potential for being very positive like the Internet becomes infiltrated by people who are dangerous . . . dealing with it is over and above what any individual parent can do."

In the name of free speech society has abandoned parents, leaving them to hold back the flood of pornography and other harmful content available online. Why is the onus on the parents? What responsibilities do the pornographers have? What responsibilities do technology and ISPs have? Parents and children should not have to defend themselves within the walls of their own home.

The CP80 Foundation is committed to personal choice on the Internet. If an of age, consenting adult wants to access pornography they should first understand the dire consequences it will have - but are free to view such content. Families who do not want pornography on their computer should have the same choice not to receive it.
