The BBC reported this week that Liz Longhurst, mother of Jane Longhurst who was raped and killed by Graham Coutts,in 2004 organized a petition of 50,000 people to ask the government to ban possession of violent or "extreme" pornography in Great Britain. Coutts admitted that he was addicted to violent pornographic websites, and his computer records showed that he accessed such sites just hours before he killed Ms. Longhurst.
The British Government included a provision to ban possession of violent pornography in the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill, which is currently being debated in the British Parliament. A small group of people who support sado-masochism have banded together to protest the law. The group submitted a petition signed by 1,800 people who say that their bondage and domination practices are between consensual adults and do not deserve to be criminalized.
Proponents of the ban pointed out that they are concerned with preventing crimes similar to the killing of Ms. Longhurst. "No-on is stopping people doing weird stuff to each other but they would be strongly advised not to put it on the Internet. At the end of the day it is all too easy for this stuff to trigger an unbalanced mind, " said Martin Salter, a member of Parliament.
Mr. Salter added that the bill doesn't ban anything not already illegal under British law - "This law is designed to meet the challenge of the Internet."
The CP80 Foundation agrees with Mr. Salter: we must update our laws to catch-up with technology. The aim is not to disrupt the activities of consenting adults; but to prevent those activities from getting free play in public forums where they are easily accessible by children. We cannot continue to allow a free flow of pornography into every home irregardless of the occupant's views and beliefs.
The CP80 Foundation is pleased to offer free training to individuals who wish to learn more about the Internet, pornography, current laws and the CP80 Internet Channel Initiative.
