Internet Addicited Parents Abuse Children

Michael and Iana Straw of Reno, Nevada pleaded guilty last week to two counts of child neglect, and are both looking at the possibility of 12 years in prison. The couple are parents to a 22-month old boy and an 11-month old girl who were malnourished and close to death last month when social workers took them to a hospital. Gratefully the children are now in foster care and are doing better.

The prosecutor said that the couple had food but did not give it to the kids because they were too busy playing video games. She said that child abuse stemming from drug addiction is common - but that abuse related to video games is not.

This comes just weeks after the American Medical Association voted not to classify Internet or video game addiction as an official addiction, citing the need for further research. There may not be mountains of scientific evidence, but the horrifying nature of the anecdotal evidence should be enough. How many more kids will suffer like these two babies before we realize that addiction to video games, the Internet, or pornography is a real problem with severe consequences?
