Pornography Snares Women

"The Internet has changed the way people use pornography. When I was growing up, pornography was way in the darkness. You had to go to a seedy part of town to buy it. Now, you can have it in the privacy of your own home."

Those are the words of clinical social worker John Reynolds in The Coloradoan. Mr. Reynolds specializes in treating men with pornography addictions. Now, more and more women are having problems with pornography. The accessibility in the privacy of their home allows them to avoid stereotypes that "women who are highly sexual are "sluts" or "whores."

One woman described Internet pornography like the jump from smoking pot to shooting heroin. "You can do it all the time," she explained. For this woman, Internet pornography led to sexual affairs and prostitution - she eventually quit her job and started to advertise her services online. Shelley described how she would stay up nights on the Internet and phone chatting. "I was unavailable emotionally to my family. I didn't show up for work at times." Her relationships were only motivated by sex.

The increasing number of women who are seeking counseling for pornography addiction is only further evidence of the porndemic and its far reaching effects. Our inability to address the porndemic will only prove increasingly problematic for society as more individuals turn themselves off to friends, family, jobs, and responsibility.

Pornography on the Internet is not only concerning because of its disastrous consequences for children. The lives of men and women are being destroyed every day; and they are taking their families with them. Something must be done.
