New Efforts to Fight Pornography

Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI) and Vice-Chairman Ted Stevens (R-AK) of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation announced last week the "Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act" last week. The bill, (S.1965) will, among other things, triple existing fines for ISPs that do not report child pornography.

The bill will also allocate $5 million for the Federal Trade Commission to an awareness campaign meant to promote safe Internet use for children.

The highlight of the bill is the creation of the "Online Safety and Technology Working Group" within the Department of Commerce. According to PC Magazine this working group will be required to "review industry efforts to produce online parental control technology; report evidence of child pornography; keep tabs on data collected about Internet-related child crimes; and support the development of new Internet safety technologies."

The working group has one year to compile and submit a report on its findings. Should the bill pass, the CP80 Foundation will do everything it can to support the efforts of the working group and to push forward the Internet Zoning Initiative as the best option available for parents who wish to protect their children from Internet pornography.

Stay tuned to CP80.org for updates on this and other bills currently being debated in Washington and around the world.
