The Times Online reported today that Mr. Brown is asking parents, ISPs, and media regulators to work together to better protect children. He is concerned about the influence of violent and pornographic content on children. “This is a challenge of modern society as a result of the development of the internet,” he said.
It appears that a recent review of policies will suggest that better filtering be employed. But as recent events show, new filters are not any better than the old ones. A 16-year old Australia boy broke through a new $84 million government filter meant to protect children.
Filters have long been pushed as the best, least restrictive option for protecting children. The truth is, filters create a false sense of security for parents; children can and do easily bypass filters.
CP80 applauds Mr. Brown's efforts and initiative to protecting children, as well as those in Australia. These nations are proactive in seeking to address the problem, rather than simply live with child exposure to pornography as a necessary by-product of the Internet.
CP80 offers the Internet Zoning Initiative as a viable solution for protecting children and free speech.
The CP80 Foundation is pleased to offer free training to individuals who wish to learn more about the Internet, pornography, current laws and the CP80 Internet Channel Initiative.
