Protect Your Wireless: Protect Yourself

The growing popularity of wireless Internet connections for home and business use has given way to a new wave of criminals. Individuals will drive around looking for open Wi-Fi connections to access the Internet. In many places this is not illegal. The crime often comes in what individuals do with that access.

Criminals can use your Internet access to view child pornography and you can come under suspicion. "We've seen instances where child pornography has been accessed by a suspect other than the individual where the IP address comes back to" explained Deputy Police David Rahinsky in Franklin, Tennessee.

Criminals are also stealing personal information via the open networks. NewsChannel5 in Franklin reported that police have seen "a surge in cases involving unsecured lines."

CP80 encourages homes and businesses to secure their wireless networks, and promotes safe and responsible deployment of wireless networks by municipalities and businesses.
