The Australian newspaper The Age is reporting today that the Education Department is investigating claims that a 6-year old boy was running a "sex club" involving at least six of his classmates.
The department reported the boy had engaged in sexual conversations with others and suggested sexual activities, but denied existence of a club.
One mother, who said the 6-year old exposed himself to her son and asked him to perform a sex act, is upset that sexual abuse charges can't be brought because the boy is under 10.
Arguments abound against charging someone as young as 6. John Cheetham, a psychologist said children that young haven't developed a sense of right and wrong. "They are too young to put themselves into someone else's shoes," he said. "We've got to be very careful about putting an adult take on it, it's all about context."
Mr. Cheetham is right, but unfortunately the context is changing. Our children are growing up in an adult world - a world saturated with sex. This fact is worsened by the Internet and parents have few options, short of turning off the world and the Internet, to protect their children. The Internet and pornography, while not specifically mentioned, surely played a role in this 6-year old's behavior. Where else does a 6 year old learn about sex acts and conversations?
We are raising a porn generation. Unless parents are given more control, specifically over the Internet in their home, we will continue to see stories like this.
