Internet Activities Drain Productivity

The British employment law firm Peninsula reported that a study of 3,500 UK companies found they were losing 233 million hours a month to employees using social networking sites at work.

The BBC reported that those lost hours amount to £130 million, or nearly $260 million every day! The director of employment law at Peninsula, Mike Huss, said these "figures that we have calculated are minimums and it's a problem that I foresee will escalate." He said that lost productivity is becoming a "major headache" for companies. The popular networking site Facebook was specifically cited.

This is only part of a larger problem that employers face with the Internet. How many millions of hours and dollars are employers losing because of pornography? Employers are stuck - they need the Internet to compete in today's globalized world, but can't afford the associated costs.

The Internet can evolve to be more responsive to the needs of individuals and companies.
